Today the studio confirmed that it is planning a second season of The Walking Dead for an unspecified time after the release of the current season’s final episode. General Alexander Samsonov, in charge of the Russian 2nd Army in the South, walked right into Ludendorff’s trap and allowed his men to be completely encircled. The Russian commanders weren’t amateurs, but they were hampered by poor communications, slow supply routes and the frustrations of moving a large army (plus heavy artillery) on foot and horseback through difficult terrain. “He was an incredibly experienced staff officer and had already won the Pour le Mérite cross, similar to the Congressional Medal of Honor, for his leadership at Liege.” “I argue that Ludendorff is the brains of the operation,” says Lockenour, who wrote a book called Dragonslayer: The Legend of Erich Ludendorff in the Weimar Republic and Third Reich. Both sides suffered heavy losses and Prittwitz, envisioning a second Russian army on its way, lost his nerve. When the Germans learned that the Russians were invading East Prussia with two armies, one in the North and another in the South, they ordered Prittwitz to attack the northern Russian 1st Army at what became known as the Battle of Gumbinnen on August 20, 1914. It was a lot of reservists and garrison troops, people normally assigned to defend fixed positions.” “Also, the 8th Army was the weakest of the German armies. “What happened was the Russians mobilized a lot quicker than the Germans expected,” says Jay Lockenour, a military historian at Temple University. The lone German army dispatched to the Russian border region known as East Prussia was the 8th Army led by General Maximilian von Prittwitz. The aftermath of this battle divided the nation.Meanwhile, Germany had committed seven of its eight armies to the West, believing that it would take at least six weeks for the sluggish Russian army to mobilize its forces and attack in the East. On 29th August Samsonov realised the hopelessness of the situation and took his own life. The terrain was tough, his men were hungry and tired, and the Germans were expecting them! On 26th August the Russian army was surrounded and confused. Samsonov’s route to invasion was difficult. Not only was it extremely difficult to contact all the soldiers, as there was so many spread out so far, but also they were not careful enough with their radio communications! The Germans were able to listen in to the radio messages from each General, Rennenkampf stating that he was staying put and Samsonov that he was advancing. One problem these two armies faced was poor communication. Two Russian armies commanded by General Paul von Rennenkampf (Pavel Karlovich Rennenkampf) and General Alexander Samsonov invaded East Prussia, Germany, at the end of August 1914. It was fought in the German village Tannenberg, (now north-eastern Poland) and was a serious defeat for Russia. ![]() The Battle of Tannenberg, starting on 26th August 1914, was one of the largest battles on the Eastern Front during the First World War. ![]() ![]() ![]() Winter is also a time to provide extra calories for both meat and egg birds. The soiled bedding and nesting materials can be added to your compost bin but not directly to the garden. Remove and replace bedding and nesting materials seasonally, unless you notice it needs to be changed sooner. Make sure they have areas of sunlight and adequate shade. Give them at least 6′ from the ground to the top of the aviary. Whether you decide to house your quail on the ground or in cages, provide a space for your quail to fly. Each cage will comfortably hold 10-12 birds. You can build this complex up to six-stories, keeping 10 cm distance between each story. Each cage should measure 6′ long by 1′ wide, and it should be divided into six equal compartments. You can build a quail high-rise hotel if you do not want to keep them on the ground. You need to consider four-legged predators as well as hawks, owls, and snakes. The most important thing to consider with a ground pen, like a chicken tractor, is how you are going to make it predator-proof. First, quail can be housed in pens on the ground, as this most closely resembles their natural habitat. You have two basic options when it comes to the shelter you will provide for your quail. Quail are not terribly fussy about their housing. Bobwhite quail start laying later in life and you need to separate them into mating pairs for more successful breeding but they are still easy to care for and one of the most popular quail breeds. If raising quail for eggs, they begin laying at approximately 50 days old and should lay around 250 eggs a year. They are ready to harvest at seven weeks of age. Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica, is a hardy breed that is fairly disease resistant and thrives in small cages. The two most popular quail breeds are Japanese quail and Bobwhite quail. As with any animal, be sure to keep their area clean and odor-free. Most locations that do not allow poultry find quail to be acceptable – even for backyard homesteaders in a busy neighborhood. If you wonder whether or not you can begin raising quail where you live, check the local zoning regulations. They require very little space and are too quiet to bother the neighbors. Quail can be raised successfully by urban homesteaders who want to produce their own meat or eggs but do not live in a neighborhood that permits chickens. Quail are also family-friendly, making them the perfect animal for homesteads with small children. Quail can be raised in small areas, are low maintenance and are inexpensive to raise with a fast and high return on investment. Homesteaders looking for a money-making venture should consider raising quail for profit. ![]() ![]() The DHCP server responds with an IP address for the device, a subnet mask, a default gateway, a Domain Name System (DNS) server address, and a TFTP server name or address. The men and women who worked at the Lawndale factory might not have had the most rewarding gig in the world. In fact, it looks like it’s nary changed a bit since the days when workers churned out tiny timber all day. It’s now called the Bloomingdale Trail, or-to the locals- “The 606.”Īs part of the rustalgic scenery visible from the The 606, you can still see the old Lincoln Logs plant, which-unlike most factories from its era-has neither been demolished nor turned into condominiums. As a bit of a happy ending to that portion of our story, however, the city spent ten years and $95 million reviving the old track into a unique 2.5 mile bike path and public space, which officially opened in 2015. The building was owned and operated by the Playskool MFG Co., which purchased Lincoln Logs in the early ‘40s and helped elevate it into one of the ubiquitous toys of post-war suburbia.īy the 1980s, of course, virtually all the manufacturing along this strip was gone, and the elevated track of the Bloomingdale Line was abandoned and grown over. This positioned it conveniently along the same Bloomingdale train line as many other industrial all-stars of the era, including the Ludwig Drum Co. Lawndale Avenue in Humboldt Park, a space previously occupied by the Harmony Instrument Company. John Lloyd Wright, after all, was the son of the guy who invented the very concept of “organic architecture.”įrom the 1940s through the 1960s, Lincoln Logs’ Chicago factory was located at 1750 N. But the lasting appeal of Lincoln Logs was already baked in-the perfect product with the perfect marketing campaign, all born from the mind of a man with a unique perspective on the delicate balance between 20th century urban progressivism and rural, frontier romanticism. There were many imitators that tried to steal Lincoln Logs’ niche over the years, including the “Frontier Logs” of crosstown rival Halsam Toys. There is even a sly reference to building “little houses” at a time when Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House” book series was all the rage among the gentler set. Today we don’t have to do the things the pioneers did, but you boys and girls can build the same sort of little houses, barns, forts and villages that the pioneers did if you use LINCOLN LOGS.”īesides the appreciated Fort Dearborn shoutout, the key takeaway from the copy above is the phrase “boys and girls.” Gender based toy segregation usually dictated the selling of dollhouses to girls and train sets to boys, but Lincoln Logs were for everybody. They also built a big fort called Fort Dearborn and made it entirely out of logs. “How they cleared land, built log cabins, and fought the Indians. “You all know the stories people tell about the pioneers who settled our country,” read a 1934 Lincoln Logs advertisement. And yet, through a magical confluence of imagination, nostalgia, and patriotism, they somehow became “America’s National Toy.” Why worry about complex assembly lines and detailed craftsmanship when you can just sell a kid a box of raw materials and let them finish the job?! In an industry typically dominated by hip new technology and shiny objects that “do stuff,” Lincoln Logs were nothing more than what they purported to be-logs. One of the most successful toys of the 20th century was also one of the most ingenious from a manufacturing sense. The game did not overstay its welcome as full playthrough takes about 5 to 6 hours. There was not much time for that realization of the game’s flaws to fester, however, as it was quite short. Each completed quest line made others more trivial and by the end, I was just clicking through obvious choices to see the ending. Once you figured out what items belonged to what questlines, it was simply a question of proper sequencing, as narrowing down of options left little room for second-guessing. This core principle worked specifically because Kindergarten dared to be obscure.
